Anyone used this? I've a project that a developer wants to use this for, but is it really going to be the next Flash? Does the download to view a site with it come packaged in Vista, or will everyone have to download it?
Thoughts, advice, please...

Today was the first I'd heard of it. <kills developer>

What does your project require that can't be done using existing, already popular and accepted techniques?
I say, screw your developer - you can't trust techies to make judgement calls like that.
Raar.

No, I actually know very little of it. But I want to shoot Bill Gates on a daily basis for the other fantastic suite of products I have to deal with. I just meant that as a new product its gonna be tough going to build yer first project and I can forsee lots of client calls and emails about it as the project progresses...

Yeah, I hear you. My developers that I usually work with are too busy, and the others are now too expensive. If you know of any good flash developers (stupid question I know) then please let me know.

It does not come with Vista. Everyone will have to download the plugin.

Ehh...another attempt from someone to try and overtake a plugin that everyone already has. Remember Adobe LiveMotion (before Adobe aquired Macromedia)...? My guess is the same thing will happen. I'm not going to download another crap Microsoft piece of software. I deal with Vista already.
- Yes, the least amount of microsoft shite on my system the better.ian

From what I hear, it's still somewhat buggy, and the runtime capabilities don't hold a candle to flash player.

Integrates/similar development environment as other .NET tools, that is all.

So, LiveMotion was the "Flash Killer", now its the turn of Silverlight. My advice: if you really want to use this technology, build a second site. Until we know if its going to catch on, you will be loosing a really big portion of your audience. Once the plug in comes standard on all browsers, then you can eliminate the second site and just have the silverlight one, but it might be a few years before that happens.

whats the project?

Silverlight will never have the ubiquity of the Flash plug-in.
- dskz0
why the fuck did they call it silverlight?

Microsoft has a deal with NBC so that all the Summer Olympics content will be streamed using Silverlight. So if you want to see any of that content, you will have to get the player.
- Fortunately, I couldn't care less about the Olympics :)ETM
- Or, if you want to see that content, you can watch it on TV, like most people will.fyoucher1
- s a good attempt on getting the player to the masses, we'll see what happensMeeklo
- Playboy just made some of their archives available but only for people with the Silverlight plugin...vaxorcist

Personally, I'd just fire him for bringing it up.

I just downloaded it

I installed it because its promotional website required it to view its content and i wanted to check it out. (they should probly have used flash) Anyway I at least expected to see something that flash couldnt do, but looked like nothing new at all.
