uhm.. if I'm on pc.. and I can open the file.. why wouldn't the client be able to do the same?

hahaha good point!

what you might find is that a MAC does not put the file extension on the end of it, so pc cant read it.
try renaming with the full file extension:
name.indd

can I send it to someone - please - im fucked otherwise...

Ok, from the adobe website, but never tried it:
Save backwards to previous InDesign versions
To open an InDesign CS3 document in InDesign CS2, you must export the InDesign CS3 document to the InDesign Interchange (INX) format and make sure that the computer running InDesign CS2 is updated with the appropriate plug-ins.The person running InDesign CS2 can obtain the compatibility plug-ins by choosing Help > Updates and following the prompts. Plug-ins can also be installed from the Adobe website: Choose Support > Updates, and go to the InDesign Downloads page.
Note: Be aware that content created using features specific to InDesign CS3 might be modified or omitted when you open the document in a InDesign CS2.1. Choose File > Export.
2. From the File Type (Windows) or Formats (Mac OS) menu, choose InDesign Interchange.
3. Click Save. You can open the .inx file in InDesign CS2 to convert it to an untitled InDesign document.

Sorry - I might not have explained myself properly...
Forget CS3...
I have done a file in CS2 on mac.
The client on a PC wants to open the same file but it wont open. It crashes her machine.

that sucks...
Does the client just want to see it? Can't you just give it to them as a PDF... for the time being?

try the extension thing (uncheck the hide extension box when saving)
also, is it a big file? It could just be that her PC can't handle the size of the file.
Also, why does the client need to open the file? You're the designer.
Send them a PDF!

They asked us to design a template for the in-house team...
its a 3mb file - so not big
I really dont know what else to do...

Is the file name too long? or not got .indd extention?
One thing worth trying is replace all fonts with times new roman or arial. Then send to client for test as it sounds like it could be font related to make it actually crash!

also what ian said...
1. Choose File > Export.
2. From the File Type (Windows) or Formats (Mac OS) menu, choose InDesign Interchange.
3. Click Save.
