i've been trolling this board since it was Newstoday, and I always cringed when someone posted a seemingly "stupid" how-to question...
but now it is my turn. and I will introduce it by saying I am not a designer per say, but a musician who has a interest in design. so give me a bit of slack, ok?
how the heck do you get this very over-used, seemingly simple effect in InDesign or Illustrator?
basically I just want the letters outlined with a box, sort of like when you highlight text.
everytime I sit there and do this by creating boxes around the text - I get this feeling I'm wasting my time, and that there is just a far simpler way of doing it.
insult away, but please someone explain this....

which version?

I don't know of any automatic way of doing that.
I'd be 'stupidly' adding rectangles underneath too.
- visualplane_0
step 1. Type the text and create outline
step 2. Make a black box underneath
step 3. Use pathfinders to punch it out
step 4. Jump out the window- step 5. Repeatvisualplane_

That's how you do it. You draw a box under the text. I'm so fucking disappointed. Stupid questions always light this place up like Guy Fawkes night.
Well, I'm still going to try and be facetious and smart arsed in the hope some goo dmay come of it, so can I just say that what you need to do it to, err... is... what you..
okay, you have OH I GIVE UP.

YOU PICKED A STUPID TYPFACE. ITS STUPID. DUMB STUPID TYPEFACE.
Where have all the quality retarded n00bs gone these days?

in indesign you have the option to color the text and the text box.
in the swatches window with your text box selected there's 2 icon next to the fill / stroke. A T for the text and a square for the text box...

In InDesign:
Create a text box
Set the font color to white
Set the background color to black (you can see which color you are setting in the color palette, theres a box and a T)
Ta da

nice i did not know that ninja.
seems unpossible in illy though.. :(
- Mmm, I really need to start using this fabled 'inDesign'.detritus

Best way to do it is in InDesign.
Make a text box, type out your text.
Then make the type underlined.
Then adjust the underline settings so the underline is very thick (as thick as the height of your type). You can also change the colour of the underline.
Then shift the underline upwards to it sits directly behind your type.
(images below)- I'd rather color the text box.ninjasavant

In Illustrator
1. convert text to outlines type menu --> create outlines
then
2. object menu --> compound path --> release
