If I could get the 20D body for the same price as the XTI with the shitty Kit Lens, which should i choose? I plan to use a different lens regardless.

why not spend the etra coin and get an XSi?

20D has more professional controls
XTI is slightly newer and is 10 mp

20D is faster, if you're capturing action. XTi has that anti-dust thing, which could be cool, also has a huge LCD that can be annoying in the dark. some people say the XTi is more awkward to hold than a 20D.

what are you going to be shooting?

mostly portraits and live music

in that case go with the XTi. it's newer, it has faster access to the memory card and a big LCD so you can have a better preview of photos as you capture them.

If your new to photography the XTI is plenty of camera to grow into. Plus they soon will be dirt cheap.

I got a canon 300d about 4 years ago.
I use it quite often, and I still feel don't feel comfortable calling myself a photographer (and I was lucky enough to get published in a few music mags).I would like to get a better camera but the truth is, I still use $35 of my camera, I still don't know what everything does, and it's very often that I find myself discovering something new.
I think when the discovering stage stops, then I will be ready for a better camera. My 300d is the initial step for anyone looking to learn how to use a digital SLR. I love it.
Again, I'm not a photographer, I'm a designer that likes to shoot ;)
Good luck with whatever you decide.
