I always saw sitting areas in book stores as more of a social outlet to the store, and therefore staying for a few hours was perfectly reasonable. Disclaimer: living in a low-population area has spoiled me with never not having a place to sit at B&N.

i have no problem with someone taking advantage of what bn seems to encourage BUT once you get up, your turn is over.

This is along the same lines as people who sit on the chair next to the aisle on a train and leave the window seat empty so they can have some personal space.... wtf
I see people doing this everyday even at rush hour, sometimes I just stand next to them switching my eye between them and the empty seat until they budge over
- ask if you can sit on their lap.cramdesign
- squeeze by into that window seat.skelly_b

The hell with that...call them out and embarrass them in front of all the other passengers... Then as you get into the seat, be sure to give them a nice long closeup of your ass
- Actually I always found it quite satisfying to just cram my way past them into the seat withtout a word.epigraph

Hench, I hate when people take up 2-3 seats anywhere when they don't have to. Guys do this a lot. You should just ask them to move...
- I say guys because they like to spread their legs out as far as possible.Jaline
- I really have no problem asking them to move...set
- Some people are rude about it, and shove their way past. It all depends on the moods of everyone...Jaline

Just give their stuff to a clerk, and ask him to put it in the "lost and found."

They always give attitude when you try to grab the chair...my favorite excuse is:
"I thought you left these here by accident - I didnt realize you were still in the store"
my other strategy is:
"Mine now...Does this have your name on it? Go tell on me, I dare you"

We are, of course, much more civilised in Scotland, you'll just get plunged outside tho.

i hate those people that go to B&N and sit and read books. WTF?
Buy the book, bastard!
- Why - what's wrong with going to a bookshop and sit down with a few books? It's not a fucking McDonalds.Corvo
- if you cannot afford the book, i am sorry i offended you.TREBIO
- who who who... now why u gotta go there...uh?OSFA
- If you're standing with the book thats ok, but once you sit down you've crossed the line.mtgentry
- i'll agree with that.TREBIO
- Then why the hell have the chairs and reading areas in the first place? It's not the fault of the ppl who actually read.Jaline
- "afford the book"? ... Get a life, man - or a shrink.Corvo
- got a life. get a library.TREBIO

"In my mind, if your ass leaves the chair it is up for grabs."
totally. you can't hold the seat.

I think it's understandable if it's just to get another book, but wrong if you go to the poop-room.

take control. splash a chai latte in their eyes. whack them over the head with a scattergories game.

I hate people who take the time to post their complaints about B&N chair usage.
- why hate your self, it dont make any sense. cheer up! :-)akrokdesign

find books on constipation and masturbation and return them to their seat before they get back from the poop-room

This is why there are time restrictions in other places, or for computer use. I think you lose your chair as soon as you go far away from it, or go away for longer than 30 sec.
But I don't agree with making fun of people for sitting down to read a book or two. Yes, they should buy the book, but why are there designated seating areas then? A lot of these stores encourage reading in the store. They probably just want you to sample it, and I think most people do. Some do, but many don't sit there for hours and hours and read the ENTIRE book.
