For those that are interested, and clearly this was a hot one with many people hanging for an answer...
I've been playing with this and think it's a combination of things, but, the most important being the use of "overlay" which is what gives the pushed / high contrast appearance to areas of overlap... combining this multiple times, ie. having multiple instances of the same object / animation, all set to overlay on top of each other.
So, there you go.

Yeah, nadnerb is definitely correct, but I can't figure out the combination, there's some weird stuff going on there! I had a quick play before with a few combinations, but I'm missing a trick somewhere! The way the circles melt into each other and the intensity of the glow increases at the crossover... hmmm
- james,
it's probably a combination of a after effects filter and some scripting

It's some sort of "difference" blend maybe?

Blend effects, several layers. . .and trial and error, I suspect. Multiply, add, darken, screen - combinations of these. And masks with soft edges (i.e. script to cache as bitmap both layers, set one as the other's mask etc.)

It was created with Flash CS10

Anyone know how this Splash screen is done? It's some sort of combination of the "advanced" blending effects in Flash, which I've played with plenty of times before, but can't quite fathom this out...
