Early one morning I read an index card on a window that said "artist assistant needed, please knock" I walked off the street into the studio of Ernst Neizvestny, a sculptor, and he nodded, yes ok, come to this maquette and sand here and here. "The body is like an apple, exploding inside to the skin." he handed me a block of wood and a sheet of sandpaper and an apple. " Make this body like apple." I was standing next to this enormous block of plaster. " I am to going see my friend Arthur Miller."
When I looked up he was gone and I was standing in the middle of his cavernous semi-dark studio. I could hear traffic outside, people walking past, their shadows tracing across the white painted out front window. Whish whoosh whish all day back and forth with the sand paper. I had no idea what I was doing.
When he didn't come back, it was dark and 9 o'clock I walked out closing the door behind me.

i once dropped off my book for review and the a.d. walked out and handed it to me as i was waiting for the elevator. she wanted to save me the trip of coming back to pick it up. not exactly a fired story but to this day i dream of burning down the Psychology Today offices.
- she must have been pretty since you didn't blame her: or is that bad psychology?********
- i once told an AD that she had the most beautiful eyes i'd ever seen, in a port review. i got nowhere with it. she did introduce me to her friend at Spin...DoubleKing

been fired twice (once at a restaurant in college, once at a design job without ever being told why) and laid off once.
I'm now at the best studio I've ever worked for, so I really can't complain. Everything turned out better than I ever hoped. Nevertheless, there are few things in life that are as humbling as being fired, especially when it's a job you care about.

on another fired thread i said i didn't have any cool fired stories, but i just thought of one! in college i worked in the meat department at a few grocery stores. on the butcher block there was a girl who was much younger than i and she was the 'butcher block manager'. she was only 19, haha. i would never listen to her and criticize her for never cleaning off the scales and the fish case (gross). one day i got sick of it and just told her off and i quit the next day. my friend was the meat department manager at another grocery store (same franchise) and he said he'd hire me on. well, after i go through the hoops and whistles it turns out i am no longer allowed to work at this grocery store (ever) because the girl reported me and said i was 'sexist and stated i would never work with women'. i never even said anything like that. screw that place.
- I'm banned from a grocery store too. Sometimes I hope I have grown up enough (physically) to go back....Jaline
- so that no one will recognize me. But I doubt it, hahaJaline
- what did you do!!!studderine
- stole stuff with my friends once. It was funny, b/c I was a pretty good thief. I did it for fun & b/c I was bored. It's long over :)Jaline

Never been fired. I kind of wish I have been though it seems like it builds character. That sculptor studio story is awesome btw.

Funny, seems nobody here has been fired due to their lack of productivity.

I was "let go" after 5 years. My boss came up and said that he and his boss had a "special project" they needed me to meet about. I grabbed my notebook and though I was going to work on a new exciting project. They asked me to close the door behind me and then told me that they needed to let me go.
"You must be shocked to be let go" my art director said. "No, I'm shocked you'd lie to me to get me behind close doors and BTW take all my shit out of your portfolio".
Best thing that ever happened to me, I was calling it in for years and doing freelance work on their time ( don't tell facksake)

my second quickest was 3 weeks. it was weird because I had another job lined up. so they called me in to can me and once they said 'we're going to have to let you go' I said 'that's okay I was going to quit anyway'

I've never been fired, I have quit a job when I got a call to ask why I wasn't showing up for my shift as I was across the country on a wimb. It was awesome.
"Are you coming to work today?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"I'm in Montreal. It's nice."

"Oh yeah, I quit. Bye!"
