What if you have had any "bad experiences" at work in the past? I mean, a bad working relationship with your ex-boss, for example.
I my case, I have a strong portfolio and cv - but had a problem with my ex-boss some years ago in a well known company I worked for as senior art director (he wanted me to stay at the office 10/12 hours/day as a normal routine without paying that extra time). I said "no" (with arguments, in a kind way) and was kicked off.
In fact, I think that incident has had a negative influence in my career (this guy is the CEO of one of the most known agencies in the country). This bastard told me "I would have many problems to find a job in the future". Thanks god I'm a freelance and things go well, but sometimes I would like to call "Winston Wolf" and commision a nice job :)

Well I do huge amounts of overtime, and get paid more for working 2 days at a service station than a whole week as a designer. But it's the job I wanna do, shame I have to work every single day of the week to get by.

I once worked for a print house and one day the boss walked in and said he had got a new £175k contract.
He said come in tomorrow and we can all get started.

The next morning I walked in and found 3000 boxes that need leaflets packed. He said pick a box and get started. Told him to pack it himself and fuck off.haha even makes me smile 10 years later

Yes. it involves my day off, a phone call and a security guard after said phone call.

My favorite "screw you" was when the last salary employer I had told me they would not pay me for the whole morning if I came in late again.
When I came in late the next day (I always came in late - fuckin hated this place) and the told me I would not get paid until 12 I said "ok, I'll be in the cafe accross the street until 12". About 1/2 later the marketing manager and HR bitchola came to the cafe to talk. That turned into big arguments and them packaging me out.
It was the best thing I've ever done for myself. I've been freelancing ever since and haven't looked back.
