I would go for Dell or even gateway if money is an issue, they make some of the cheapest computers available right now, just ask them how much money you can spend and get the fastest computer you can afford.

If all you need is 1440x900, don't get a 17". It will kill your battery and your backpack.

17" isn't ideal for a laptop, if you ask me. To big, too heavy, and not comfortable to use anywhere but on a table - so why not get a stationary computer?
If you want a laptop, don't go over 15.4", I'd say...
