I got one this week - so far its great.
Its very bare bones in features (record/stop record, playback, delete) but that's what makes it kinda cool. My wife loves it since we can just capture anything the baby does and quickly and easily get it on one of our computers. Its very small and light - we just keep it in our pockets all day like a cell phone. The quality is decent - using the zoom feature really messes up the image though. Pretty good audio quality. AVI files are 640x480 and it has built-in software for editing (but I just drag the files off of it and edit in iMovie or Final Cut after I send them through VisualHub). Pretty good in low light too. Lens is actually quite nice at its fixed focus.
It does what it says and does it well. Have fun with it.

I got one of those cheap Aiptek ones, basically the same thing - a cheap, near-disposable web video camera. I preferred the Aiptek over the Flip because it had better connection options and a removable SD card...

flip has compatibility issues with imovie
- Throw the .avi files in VisualHub and convert them - works great with iMovie and FCP.blackfrancis
- QT Pro works fine also - its just slower...

blackfrancis that's what we're after. We're having a baby in September so want it for then really. We had a Canon mimi DV and never use it for tapes / wires etc and carrying bags around. Flip seems good. I was planning on using it with imovie so I'd like to know what the issues are.
Whats TV playback like?

I have to convert the .avi files to get them to work in iMovie. VisualHub does this easily and quickly. It's $24 for the software - I know some people don't like paying for stuff like that, but I use it for lots more than converting .avi files too.
Flip Cam File info says (in QT):
3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.1, 640 x 480, Millions
Microsoft ADPCM, Mono, 44.100 kHz.I can throw up a file for you if you'd like to check compatibility with your machine. Just let me know.
And check out Perian - it allows playback of a bunch of non-mac native formats. Good luck.

glad someone asked about this. I was looking at one of these to take up to the mountain skiing. wanted something cheap that I could thrash and not give a shit, but had decent enough quality that I didn't feel like I was looking at a video shot with a cell phone.

fucking love these things and they are easy to use and just throw the footage into VisualHub as mentioned above to edit in FCP or other .mov editing system. TOTALLY worth the hundred bucks or so.

I have one - does the job, allows my wife to record our daughter and then throw those badboys up on her blog so I can watch from work, wishing I was having fun with them :(

a friend has this one... Kodak Zi6 HD.. he seems to really like it.. it has received good reviews online.. better quality than the Flip.. they look cool.. i kind of want to get one to screw around with..

they're dope. we did the work for them at the office. its amazing how small and easy they are. i like em a lot. theres even an HD butters one.
