A lot of phones at the moment have poor internet browsing and a lot of them still rely on specially created sites.
But remember that technology is always changing - all the new phones that will be out this year will be battling to catch up with iphones/blackberry web browsing capabilities i reckon.

Some clients recently have asked about creating an alternative site for web on phones but from what ive seen on my Archos and what you can get on the iphone and blackberry, they'll handle a "normal" website.
It's true that the iphone doesnt handle flash, how does it support youtube then?
my archos supports flash but it only supports it up to flash up to a certain level - it wont see embedded fonts for some reason. maybe thats me making something wrongly.
dont know what the blackberry supports in terms of flash. You certainly dont need to worry about specific dimensions for screensize like you wouldve done for 800x600 screens as these new fangled gadgets have the zoom in and out functions.

Apple just won't back Flash ... that's the only reason iTunes takes 50mb of ram to play an mp3 ...

sound advice. Add to it that most mobile devices aren't meant to browse 300+ images (as is one site in question) in a portfolio....

Well if it's for one particular phone it's not to bad, but if they wanted it to send out to other people with different phones that's when it gets tricky. Browser compatibility and the phones capabilities make it difficult to design for multiple phones allot of times you have to design for the lowest common denominator. I mean some phones can only display a few 100k of data. It mostly depends on the need of the client. If it's just for an iphone though, you won't have too much trouble
