Digging the new John Grant album this afternoon, I have a sweet JG story I can share. I went to see Efterklang at The Barbican Hall in London a few years ago and was lucky enough to snag backstage party passes for my friend and myself through a promotions company. The gig was great with John playing solo piano for his support set and I was already familiar with his music as Queen of Denmark had recently been released. So I head backstage with my mate and we mingle near the nibbles available and we kept our eyes peeled for any stars we might recognise although quite what we were going to do if we saw any I wasn't sure as neither of us had thought that far ahead.
I met Budgie (drummer for The Banshees of course and also playing for Efterklang that night) hanging around, but he had the same shirt on as me so I was kinda freaked out by that so we didn't say much except give each other knowing nods. But then I spotted John Grant standing against a wall on his lonesome and thought well here's my chance to go over and have a good chat with the chap. So I said hello and complimented him on his set and told him how much I loved his new album, and shameless self publicist that I am, told him about my radio show and that I'd played several tracks out from his LP. Of course I couldn't help myself but had to give him one of my CD mixes which I always carry with me when I go to gigs, as you never know who you'll meet etc.
The mix was a copy of the cheeky Jazz Mag Numb 2 the track-listing of which at least made him smile. So anyway I asked him if he might be interested in recording a future session for my show and he says "sure, what's your number?" so I pull out my crap Motorola phone and fumble about trying to work out how to find my own number as pathetically I couldn't remember it and he takes the phone from me, holds it between 2 fingers and looks at it and says "what kind of piece of shit is THIS!?" and laughs heartily at my rubbish phone and tells me to write his number down on the back of my hand, which must have been wrong as in my haste to write it down turned out not to work when I rang it a few days later...
But he was such a sweet friendly guy that night and he no doubt has no regrets in ever getting back to me about that session and I'm pretty sure he still has a better phone than me.
