Maybe watching the link in this thread will help. http://www.qbn.com/editors_choic…
Although the opinions on Steve Jobs may be mixed, he does tell a story about his work with Rand that ties in with your issue. I do understand that Paul Rand was a revered designer by the time he worked with Jobs, but I believe that you deserve to stand up for yourself. You're a designer, problem solving and communication is a major part of your job, and the client needs to understand that. Rand may have been rather direct with Jobs, and you might want to be more congenial, but that doesn't mean that you can't use the same thinking.

yeah, at the very least, you need to say what you think about their opinion/idea. If they still press you, just go with it. But always stand up tall and voice your opinions. If they choose not to listen, you've got no regrets and you've still got your integrity...

Another part of it may be that he client could become difficult, not wanting to pay for something that they aren't quite satisfied with (as they see their random ideas, don't work out after all, but blame it on the designer of course).
It should be possible to have them pay up anyway, but nobody enjoys that kind of trouble.

I guess if you're asking this question, you don't have enough confidence to defend your work. Then get it done and move on.
- Or the client is a little too confident and/or stubborn?doctor
