  Although the opinions on Steve Jobs may be mixed, he does tell a story about his work with Rand that ties in with your issue. I do understand that Paul Rand was a revered designer by the time he worked with Jobs, but I believe that you deserve to stand up for yourself.

  You're a designer, problem solving and communication is a major part of your job, and the client needs to understand that. Rand may have been rather direct with Jobs, and you might want to be more congenial, but that doesn't mean that you can't use the same thinking.
