max

i was thinking maya but felt like a dinosaur. sorry, what's max?
- wendog0
Maya, after effects if u want to be cheap abt it
- Llyod0
3d studio max. easier to learn than maya and a faster renderer. maya is for more highend modeling and animation.

I agree with Llyod, 3D Max much easier learning curb...
After effect can do some great stuff though...

is there a difference between 3d studio max and the above link for Autodesk 3ds Max?
also are there big output difference between maya and max for how to deliver the type to other applications?

"what all do you mean by "complicated 3D type?"'
oh, i meant as in not Flash. Like the rotating reflective chrome Type floating in a Jeep commercial or text work in motion graphics.

hire a professional

;)
I would, but i want to learn how to do it. And i'd like to start off on the right foot.

There is a tutorial on how to do 3d type on after effects on the creative cow podcasts (search on itunes)
Is something like multiplying layers to give the sense of 3d.
Doesn't work for full rotations but it might help if you only want it like in 40 degrees or so

If you need bare bones 3D type (a simple extrusion) that can rotate around and have the reflective chrome materials, you can do it in After Effects and a plugin called 3D invigorator. AE used to come bundled with the classic version.
- thank you demafleez. I'm going to echo Meeklo's q. above about your experiences with cinema 4d?DoubleKing

honestly, all the 3d packages will do what you need and much more. But as someone starting out in the world of 3D, you'd be hard pressed to find a lower learning curve than cinema 4d. And that's not to say that it's incapable of producing high end work: it can. It's just I found myself wrestling less with that app than any of the others i tried (max & maya). Also, I came with some after effects knowledge and when learning C4D, there was a bit of carry over and alot of integration between the two apps.
to give you an idea, all the 3d in my reel was was done in cinema.
http://demafleez.com/demo-fleez.…each has a demo. if you wanna do simple 3D type extrusions, see my post above, but if you're looking to get some 3D ninjitsu in your skillset, I'd say go for cinema.

...and who doesn't like some ninjitsu?
Thanks all for the considered responses. Looks like i've got a lot of new stuff to investigate.

ive been learning maya at my university. it gets incredibly annoying sometimes, but the results it can deliver with mental ray are tremendous. i may pick up Max over Maya however, so i can work more quickly on projects.
Maya or Max!?
- DoubleKing0
fwiw, i should have mentioned that i'm on mac. seems that 3ds max is pc only.

I all wanna know is, where can I download a filter that will let me do this?
Freeware, preferably.
