From this week on I'm going to be working off of an external HD, so I have the same desktop no matter where I'm working...
Anyone got any experience with this? Pros and Cons? Pitfalls to avoid?

but actually... why do this rather than using a laptop connected to large displays and drives wherever you work?

Mac OS.
MacBook and iMac. External HD is connected by FireWire.
Not running any intensive apps. It's for one client really, they're supplying the OS as well as the external HD, basically so that if I am in their office I take my laptop and if I'm working from home I still work on the same HD just plugged into a different machine - the idea is to boot from the external drive and have everything there....

But if you have your laptop at their office, why aren't you just booting from that? (What's the advantage of booting from their drive?)

well firewire is slower than writing to local HD , no? other than that dont see why it shouldn't work

Cheers ribit.
Booting from their drive is because when I'm working from home I don't want to work on a small laptop monitor and on top of that it lets me have everything that is "theirs" together in one place. The apps I use are pretty much Coda, NeoOffice and Firefox.

So you are not on the laptop at home either. (all becomes clear....)
You've left us no other options... It should work fine.

haha, cheers - wasn't so much asking about options, much more if anyone had experience of working with the system on external hds...
someday I'll share my experiences :p

Yes finally figured that out :P
"Pitfalls to avoid" usually means to me things like.. "choosing the wrong technology"
