Is it still ok to use images for menu buttons like about, info, contact, etc. when it's just text. The client is set on a font that isn't a web font. Are images considered bad form in the CSS world?? Sorry for sounding stupid.

Well, images are still used of course. In menus, not so much. Personally though, the web only fonts are a tad bit boring for certain projects. In certain cases, i'll still use images / javascript rollovers.

Use images most of the time. It is a rare occasion that aliased Arial really ties a design together.

of course it's ok.

With better computers and monitors its becoming harder to notice. It depends on the target audience.

I just wanted to make sure.... it seems most menus these days a big bold Helvetica type. My font isn't crazy but it is a tad different so I just didn't want to think it was a move in bad form.
Thanks.

Aliasing isn't an issue so much in safari, but with most computer users either using firefox on a pc, or IE, (and then not necessarily having anti-aliasing even enabled) you'd be best using images to avoid the jaggies.

If the menu items will not change over time, then it's perfectly fine - just make sure to use an image replacement technique.
Check out the client side code that's powering the main navigation on http://www.apple.com for a good example of proper image replacement in a nav menu.

depends on the site, your audience

hey eegrek, you can create the menu using CSS as and unordered list which places the images inline. The upside is that you get exactly the look the client wants while still getting a search-engine friendly nav. the downside is the time it takes which when you haven't done it before can be a little time consuming but once you get it takes no time at all.
