Is this real? I mean, are they actually going to try this? Aside from all the obvious technical issues, I'm curious to see how they intend to target the dark side...
Anyone hear about Doritos planning to project a radio signal advert to some nearby star? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth…
I'm probably being a bit geeky and puritan here, but I genuinely think there should be international restrictions on this sort of activity - I mean, the chances of anything negative coming from it are miniscule.. but we just can't be too sure. Fear of advanced civilisations aside, and do we really want our primary ambassadorial contact to be an advert for an oven-cooked masticated corn product?

I'm with detritus. Plus, I don't like the idea of advertisers and companies using outer space to their advantage. At least not yet, dammit.

Site stopped responding for me but I get the idea. Nice to see advertisers now using the moon as yet another commodity. They'll soon get bored and move on

This is crazy, if the power to do this exists why a logo....i feel as though this could be used for something better, and spreading a greater message.
The only way for this to be possible and on obscured by change in angle would be to have it projecting fro ma steady airborne vehicle. a hairline movement at that distance will cause a huge miss.

The power doesn't exist anyway. The divergence (?) means that even after a few hundred miles, the point size of the laser is many times the radius of what it started out as. Even with our most powerful lasers which we regularly fire at a mirror on the moon (left on an Apollo mission) to test its distance, we can't 'see' the resultant reflection - instead we get a single photon response - ie. there's just no way with current tech we could do it. Even when we do get the power to do it, if we did fire an image with a single beam, we'd likely destroy any satellite that happened past - or, at best, we'd literally burn the atmosphere, creating a plasma front which would interfere with the beam, thereby still rendering any reflection invisible.
