Is there a piece of software commonly used amongst designers to calculate time spent on projects?
Or does anyone know of an Excel template that could be handy?
For my freelance, work I'm currently jotting down dates and hours on a notepad and adding them up on an invoice at the end of the job.
At my fulltime job, we have a rather sophisticated Excel template which isn't really suited to the work I do outside of work.
I'm by no means an Excel whizz.

I recommend Harvest as well,
http://getharvest.com/Track time, expenses and now billing (create & send invoices). And there's a time-tracking widget (works for both Mac and PC).
- they're late to the party, their invoices suck and aren't customizable. sorry harvest, you lose!********
