guess its' a numbers game....
if most of the people you hire are single, they don't have families to get back to in the evening (sorry Robotron3k)
so if you fill a place with shit like that, you'll get more and more people spending their time there, rather than at home...the more time spent at work, the more work ends up getting done, etc...
so they drop an assload of mula to make the place as attractive as possible..(HEY...hang out here...fuck going home at night...we've got food....)
i suppose it must work...folks seemed to be happy to work there...

I don't really think those things affect productivity negatively. The philosophy here has always been 'work hard, play hard'. When you are coding all day for instance taking a break to play ping pong is more stimulating than a lot of break time activities. No one abuses it but it is there when you need a break.
