I think your Mac is not recognizing it?

Can you plug it in to another mac?
- Does it need a power supply? Mine sometimes won't mount without external power (Its a LaCie)

have you tried it on another computer, to narrow down whether its the drive or the computer at fault?
(I just had a WD MyBook die totally, no lights)

What connection is it? Firewire 400/800 or USB 2?

my mate has got a mac, so i tried it on his, and it wont turn up on his either... im well gutted, thought they were good

If you want the data, the drive itself is probably OK so thats not such a big deal, you just need to get it out and connected somewhere else. Apart from that you have a warranty claim..

Try connecting it to a PC to see if it mounts

shit, I was gonna pick one of those up... now I'm scared.
did it used to work and now does not?
Plugged into the computer and not a hub?
Do you get lights and can hear it spin up?
- lukefry0
i get light on, it worked 3 days ago, and its just plugged straight into your computer, no hub, and i hear it spin everytime its plugged in

definitely not fucked - your data is still good.
Just a little I/O glitch

all my bloody music is on there to.. so its back to the turntables for a while!!

How long have you been leaving it to mount? Try leaving it a good half hour to see if that works. Also open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility) to see if it is recognised, if so you can select it and try to manually mount it.

one last question from me:
Does the drive show up but is not accessible, or does it just not show up at all?

You are going to recover the data aren't you? (i.e pull drive out, or get it looked at by someone technical...

check it out with the Built in Disk utility?
http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page…Otherwise follow horton's advice and pick up disk warrior

and remember the only safe way to work is to assume that any given drive will die today with total data loss, and build your backup/duplication strategy from there...
