Full title: LLCs, group coverage and pre-existing conditions
So i'm rocking COBRA right now. And I'm an LLC. Turns out my fiance needs to leave her job to concentrate on nursing school, meaning she'll be needing insurance now as well.
i am finding that most individial insurances do not cover pre-existing conditions while group plans DO seem to cover them.
anyone else use this little "loophole" to get better insurance? if so, care to share your notes please?
thanks

I'm looking into all this to get benefits for my guys and as far as I understand it, yes it's true. The employer gets insurance for the employees and the employees get it no matter what. BUT, as an employer, you will pay more for the coverage because you have an employee with a condition.
So from an employee standpoint it doesn't cost you anything more. If it's a $100 a month that's it with or without Cancer.... but the company they pay for the rest because you have it. That's why it's unethical to ask any health or marriage status questions when interviewing. Equal opportunity.
In your situation though you're screwed. A) Group plans by law usual require a group.. ie: 2 or more people. B) You are both the employer and employee of the LLC..... so you're paying more either way.

I would look into some different plans. I have my coverage with Blue Cross through Freelancers Union, and it covers pre-existing conditions.

Kaiser covers pre existing conditions for self employed folk (1 or more as a "group"). They don't make it easy to get though. It's something ridiculous like within a few days of your bday each year is the only way to get in. I think I waited 6 months to get in.
It isn't cheap, but about what I was paying in other states ($360/month).

You should be able to get coverage as an individual through United or Optima for around $200 a month with a condition. No matter what it is, it has to be cheaper than Cobra right??
