i was just wondering what do the agencies like source get , from finding you a job, do they get a commission from the job, or do you have to pay them etc??

they get a massive percentage of your money.
they could offer you $25 an hour say, but they are actually charging the client you're working for $35 - $40 an hour. Or, if you go salary and get hired full-time, and say your salary is 50k a year, the agency will get 20-25% from the client. It won't come out of your salary, it's something your new company will have to pay for.

the agencies get paid by the employer, you don't have to pay anything. It's a sweet deal. The employer pays an agency to find the right candidate, if they employ you, the agency gets about 10-20% of your annual salary (but that's on top of your pay so you don't lose out)
- I worked for 3 agencies in chicago when I got laid off. All three were 20-30%. It was crazy.kona

But they're all bastards, so don't waste your time using them.

If it's contract to hire it's a percentage then a buyout fee.
