hello everyone
i am planning my first ever visit to london from a land far, far away. i was wondering whether you have any suggestions where to look for accommodation that is both reasonably priced and situated ok-ish? any advice would be appreciated!
thanks

London is a tricky place to find a good bargain, but there are some to be had if you put the effort in.
Give this a look - it's cheap and centrally located:
http://www.easyhotel.comAlso, give the Filter a look. Lots of tips and tricks about London but I'll give you three here:
1: Bring a small, foldable umbrella. You're probably gonna need it.
2: Get an A-Z (Time Out also have really good guides)
3: DO NOT get a taxi from the airports to central London. Use the tube or Gatwick/Heathrow Express.

gumtree is meant to be the bizness, my flat mate uses it all the time.

Are you looking for a flat or some holiday accommodation?

http://www.easybus.co.uk - probably the cheapest tickets from/to airport if you book in advance.

"Bring your own food and toothpaste"
yeah, there is nothing good to eat in london. at all.

You can hook up for a quick, no-strings-attatched sexy time session on gumtree. Apparently.

utopian spouts a constant stream of absolute ignorance, he's one of those 'experts on everything' when in fact it's patently obvious he knows fuck all

in fact, he's probably one of those american's that come to London, hang out in 'Liesesster square' and eat at Aberdeen Steak House and then moan about the food

i have heard good reviews about st. christopher's hostels:
http://www.st-christophers.co.uk…but the ones up in russell square environs should be avoided at all costs.

while we are on the subject of london... does anyone know the name of the website or rail service that does cheap train fares to london if you book in advance.
i saw something advertised on the tv (uk) but can't remember the name.
it was like, £15 return from the midlands, or something.
sorry to hijack your thread, but it might be of use someday?!
- the trainline or something. no such thing as cheap train fares though.********

Those fares don't exist, well they do but it's one or two seats on one train that month at some odd time. Trying to book them is impossible as you have to enter your time of travel before you get a price so it's like trying to find a needle in the haystack for the cheap fare.

Please don't let this thread descend into bitching about the cost of public transport cos I'll end up throwing a massive paddy about it. But yes it is a rip-off.
- Raniator0
ok, cool... i've checked that and yeah, it's not much (if at all) cheaper.
you've answered the question, no paddies, no arguments please :)

thank you for all the advice and links. some good info and it will definitely be useful.

Don't forget gumtree 'personal' ads.

There's a place above The Earl and Percy pub on Ladbroke Grove that a friend of mine stayed in, £50 per night for a double. Nothing fancy and shared bathrooms but clean enough. Very close to Portobello markets which is better than being stuck in one of the duller suburban bits of london (most of london is difficult for a newcomer to find the good stuff unless you know where to go), some good places to eat round there too.
- woops some of the reviews on that site say it's bad. it is budget accommodation tho...vespa

The Hoxton Hotel in Hoxton is pretty good and great value if you are sharing. About £80 / 90 a room I think and you're right near Old St / Liverpool St stations
