It takes up to 6 months (yes, u read it right) to proparly clear money order. Most people assume it works like a check (hey, it's in my bank account right now so it must be all good!) but it's not, so yes it's a scam with big shinny letters.
What country is he from? It could help us come up how to fuck him over.

This is a scam, there was a write up about a guy here that went through the exact same thing.

Also, I've had friends who cashed a money order and the person who sent it cancelled it after mailing it. Took about a month and a half for the bank to verify it wasn't any good and by that time they had mailed the stuff out.

I would just keep saying. "Yeah, cashed the money order, the stuff's in the mail"...and obviously never send it.
That or dress up like a FedEx man, and deliver it yourself, and beat his ass.

CRAIGSLIST clearly states NOT accept money orders!!! Read the large print, unfortunately there are too many ass wipes out there that want to rip hardworking people off, best of luck.

This is a total scam. This happened to a co-worker of mine. Someone was attempting to by his car and they sent a money order with the same story about the assistant sending the wrong amount and then requesting the balance. The money order is bogus and the bank froze his account for 2 weeks. I really hope you didnt deposit that money order...you may bein some trouble.

Same people contacted me in regards to a refrigerator that I was selling. They said they'd send money first and all that crap. I know a guy that got taken for $2000 with a very similar scam.

similar thing happened to me. even wanted to have his "secretary" or something write a money order (some made up shit to make himself seem legit). He told me he'd pay me $50 extra just to hold the item, and also mentioned something about his son needing a kidney transplant (don't know why - but how fucking fishy is THAT?). I decided not to go through with it and I called him on it... called him a scammer. He never defended himself. Never accept anything but cash!
