Custom vs. Hosted Solution

There are plenty of industry-specific Web solutions available for, say, auto dealerships, realtors, etc.
When trying to help a client decide which option is the best fit for them (custom vs. hosted), what are some questions you would ask?
Note, this is not to 'sell' them either way, but a means of determining which avenue best suits their business.

Hosted is usually cheaper and easier but less flexible.
Custom is .. well, custom.
I guess it depends a lot on time and budget and the quality of existing hosted solutions.
I'm assuming you're talking about things like hosted shopping carts compared to building one from scratch?

Custom = you're the support desk

Thanks for the responses.
There are companies that cater to, for example, auto dealerships. You get a site for $50 a month. It's a template-based site with moderate customization available. Additionally, there are typically dealership related add-ons (lead generator, etc.).
These sites are definitely cheap, but less flexible, as jamble said.
I am trying to help someone determine which way to go and can't really think of the right questions to ask. I guess what I'm asking here is, is there really a good reason to use an off-the-shelf Web package?
