Hi,
Thinking of getting a Black MacBook 2.16Ghz, for general use, itunes, internerd, iphoto. etc But would also want to run photoshop, illustrator, indesign cs3 on it occasionally to open files and present work. Main resaon i'm thinking MB is portability and the fact it looks like something Darth Vader would have.
BUT the 15" MacBook Pro 2,2Ghz is also very tempting.
Especially with some of the refurb prices on apple.com at the moment
anyone got these? whats the MB like to use for CS3, or should i just get a MBP?

Just get the one with the best specs you can afford. But if it were me, I'd go MB Pro 15" and apple care and spark out some cash on a monitor for home that you can hook up to.

If you want to do actual work or presentations, get the PRO. It's only 0.2 Kg heavier as far as I remember. MB is just too small for that IMO. And too shiny (Pro has a matte option).
Macbook purchases were discussed heavily yesterday btw.

Got a decent rig at home 2 x 20" monitors, Mac Pro, so that does me for doing proper work. Just want something to be able to carry around and take to meetings n stuff.
The 15" MBP is £929, The Black MB is £849 so theres on ly £80 quid in it, biggest difference is the graphics card and 0.04ghz extra horsepower, they both have 2GB memory, the MB has 40Gb extra HD.

I have a black mb, but I never did a presentation on it and don't consider it suitable for that. I think Pros are industry standard right now.

I'd go MBP purely for the extra punch it has in the graphics department.

Are the glossy screens distracting to work with? refelcetions n all that?
- I thought it would suck, but you really don't notice a difference very much.CincodeMayo

Hey, do we look like geniuses to you? :)
Some people, like me, hate glossy screens and consider them unsuitable do work with. Some seem to like them. There were numerous discussions here, most people favoured matte, as I remember.

Go to an Apple store and have a play. Try before you buy.

I love my upgraded, glossy Macbook.
That being said, I don't do a lot of design work on it (I use a PC with matte screen at work), and no presentations or much gaming either. But it's lovely.
It all depends on what kind of work or play you wish to do.

just get which ever one you can afford, will meet your needs performance wise, and then fill it full of as much RAM as is possible. this will not be a lifetime purchase, nor most likely, a mid-term purchase in length remember. it will be outdated and require an upgrade as both you and technology evolve; it is hardware.
just get the one you want.

for only £80, go pro

got a black macbook, punching myself that I didn't get the pro.

If you have the money, go for the Pro. Save up if you don't. Either way, if you plan to have the machine for some time, go for the Pro. The Macbook is fine for nearly everything, but I will eventually have to replace it or get a new system. It probably shouldn't be the only machine (it's better as a side thing).

i hate glossy screen. it's okay if you aren't doing any serious design or photo editing. but if color is critical, matte screen is a way to go.
get a macbook air. it'll be good for presentation and super portable. everyone will want to play with your laptop and forget your actual work.
