is there any way to move type on the web to a new level, let's say something like Sifr, but for more amoounts of type.
(and Sifr doesn't perform well when using js lib effects like fades on images, btw)

Yes.
It's called Safari 3 - it supports embedding fonts. I'm pretty sure that's the only browser that can do it right now though - and it might just be in the developer builds.

wow, randd, thanks, i'll look that up!
seanhaus, sounds interesting, would be great if the rest of the herd would make this move as well.

you can do it in other browsers, google it. from my experience it's a huge pain in the ass and not worth it.

ok, thanks for saving me the trouble.

Have you tried sIFR3? it's not 100%, but I think it handles larger tracts of text better than previous versions.

could try this http://www.alistapart.com/articl… but I guess as with sifr it would be a bit clunky for anything other than headers or very small amounts of text and you'd be missing the SEO benefits of sifr.
- Not true. If this content is being managed at db level, it can(should) be written to flat version and cached.madirish

- Cool stuff - I should stress that I *think* it's a bit better. I don't by any means know!detritus
