Can anyone tell me how I can make a section on my website have a password access so that I can put some visuals on there for my clients to view by 'logging in'?

I use Dreamweaver MX to dabble about with my appalling, mistake riddled, frames based website (I say that now to save you save you the bother), and I would like to add a section in the margin, left called Client Access or soemthing and then when its clicked a dialogue box/prompt requires a password and once the password is input you go on to the page with the highly top secret visuals in it.

Anyone? Please? There's a bun and a glass of Vimto waiting for the most helpful boffin.

Where have all the boffins gone?

*Slurps Vimto, bites bun, smashes face down on desk and cries.

    .htacces + .htpasswd (google it)

(if your on apache that is)

it's not difficult, but has many details you should check/follow:

    Oh god.
I don't even know what apache is. I just clicked your link though neverblink and thank you for that. It tells me what I already knew... I lack the basic skills to even comprehend what that big table of things is talking about. I'll email them a pdf as always I guess.

There's half a bun and a bit of Vimto on its way over to you Neverblink.

I thought there would just be a menu item or palette item in Dreamweaver that means you can make a link password protected by chucking up a little dialogue box... like the one when you visit theroot42.org's site. Can't it be that simple? to just have an option in the web application?

    Gibber gibber.

ok - here's the deal. Apache is probably the system the webserver your site is running on uses. In Apache you can set preferences to how the files on the webserver are being treated. By using a .htacces file you can do access management for files/directories. If you want to password-protect your files/dirs you can use .htaccess in combination with a .htpasswd file, in which you can specify a list of login-names with passwords.
Use the tool in the above note to generate a .htaccess file and a .htpasswd file. Then upload these to the directory you want to have protected and your done.

    • .htaccess goes in root folder, .htpwd goes in folder you want to protect.Corvo

This is not hacker safe, just a quick n nasty basic password thingy and cos its just js they should be easy(ish) to implement for a not tech-head. Let me know how you get on.

^ there are some php snippets I think that can do the same, but I understand they're not so safe as this more complicated method.

I'm smiling, and nodding, and giving you all the thumbs up, and the A-OK symbol and saying Yes! Ah! YES, I See!.... and I have no idea what anyone of you are on about. I feel like I'm trying to locate some haemarroid cream in an isolated part of Malta that English speaking people have never visited before.

Thanks for your help. I naively thought there would be an option in Dreamweaver, much like there's and option in photoshop to make it look like your work is being viewed through the pebbled glass of your grandma's kitchen door. I guess I was wrong.

I don't wish to take up any more of anyone else's goodwill and time with this so I declare this thread to be on extended rest as its obviously going to way way way beyond my capabilites and I really can just email the things over to the client anyway... I just thought it would be easy and fancy to do it on my site.

    Ho Hum.

    • Good grief. I'm slightly concerned at how techno-illiterate I am. Its much much worse than I thought...Spookytim

Can you make directories on your webserver?

If this is just a temporary client preview - create a directory called /cllienntnaammesakdghaskdfha/ , stick your files in there and when the client's got the files, delete them from your server. That's what I do - I used to password protect files, but then the silly buggers would lose them/not send them on to their partners, etc etc

Ok, so it's not 'secure', but for the week or so online you're talking about, I don't think it really matters.

    • sorry - 'i used to password protect DIRECTORIES'. You could also password zip/sit your files for extra protection.detritus
    • oh, and, obviously, you don't link to this section from your site - just email them, in case that wasn't blindingly obvious!detritus

Ah no, good advice, but actually not what I was hoping to do. I usually send out, or make available, files/visuals for clients which I either email to them or upload to my idisk... either way I can password protect the zip or sit files.

What I thought might be a bit more 'flash' would be to say to client's "there's some visuals for you to view on my website. Go to website, click on *Client Access* and put the password in"... and what would happen would be that they, exclusively, got access to a 'section' much like the other sections on my website, in which was their visuals, presented in a vertical scrolling manner, with my comments and notes interspersed between visuals. It was just a thought that I could do that so that when a music industry client wants to look, and also wants to discuss with the manager and the act on a conference call, they could all be looking at my website... it would just look quite smart that's all and would also encourage clienty types to visit my site and maybe have a look at other piece of work on there.

I really did just assume Dreamweaver would have little item to do it and quickly realised its not that easy once people started posting so its all cool, I will continue in the same way as always with stuffit files and/or pdfs. Nay Bothr.

Thanks for taking the time though Det.

    • Ah, ok - i getcha. In that case, if you want fancy, you got to get fancy. Screw on your tech head and get it down.detritus

^ look what you need is simple authentication for parts of your site (not fucking Guantanamo), to organize your site and be a bit eye-candy to your client. Of course this won't keep hackers away, but you can setup a simple php file in directories to do that nice effect. Just follow the instructions:

Corvo, you are as always, right on the money. I have downloaded that code thingy and I feel confident that I can include it in a page made in Dreamweaver, it seems very simple, so that is the answer. Thank you.

I did originally have a bun and a glass of Vimto for the most helpful boffin, but they were consumed earlier so I am going to send you all the parts of my sandwich that I don't usually eat as a token of my gratitude. Please expect some lettuce, at least one slice of tomato, a knife edge's worth of mayonaisse, some crab flakes, an olive on a stick, four slices of boiled egg, some corned beef, a spoonful of chutney, a slice of dill pickle and the fat off my ham. I really should stop ordering that sandwich. I only ever eat the bread.

    Corvo Rocks.

    • "corned beef"? beats me but I'll take it, thanks.Corvo
