crap at paths

i have this niggly issue with clipping paths, every now and again, for no real reason (it seems to me!) when I create a clipping path the selection area is the portion of the image outside of the object im trying to clip... if you know what i mean.
so basically if i have a pic of a cat or cake that i REALLY want to clip, my clipping path selects the area outside the cake, or cat, instead of the actual cake or cat. (the background, i guess)
i've done about 5 paths so far today and all were fine until now the one at the link below shows how the first path was sh!t.
does anyone have any idea why this happens? i will supply a freshly cut cat or cake to the man and/or woman who can tell me why

Do you mean when you make a selection from a path it selects the opposite of what you want selected?

im not sure, im confused now....
no, basically the initial path i create seems to select the 'background' area rather than the actual object im trying to clip.

if you are creating paths from selections, inverse first. cmnd-shift-i.

or perhaps you're not closing the last point on your pen tool path.

I see you are using CS3, so perhaps there is some weird stuff going on with your settings. How are you creating the paths?
- jimzyk0
nope its neither of those horton, I'm creating a path from scratch, not from a selection and i've finished the path too.... its really strange, only seems to happen every now and again

open pic - new path - pen tool - clip - finish
it work 95% of the time but sometimes just decides to choose the background instead of the object - maybe its a glitch?

Here’s my theory; when i make clipping paths, I don’t just go around the object in one go – that’s gay. I make a whole bunch of smaller paths based on a bunch of little OCD-esque rules that I won’t go into here. Anyway, after that I do all the Boolean combining (Pathfinder) to get my final path. Now, when I am doing this I have cause to highlight some of those buttons in the info bar. So if the “Subtract from Path Area” button is highlighted and you create a new path, it will, as you say, select the outside area of the cake.

seriously, what is a niggly issue??
- MrOneHundred0
It’s actually a giggly issue that you get when you have a head-cold.

the word 'path 1' will appear as outline text when you've created a clipping path from it rather than just being a standard path.
