what is the easiest way to mask a curvy circular line, a mask along a path?
seems like it should be easy. Do I have to use circles and shape tweens?

what do you mean, mask a curvy circular line? if the line is circular, there's probably no need for the mask to be a circle...? and shape tweens are not likely to be what you want either.
