I've been doing some research on how 'upscale' magazines get accounts (advertisement) on fields such as fashion, alcohol, resorts, etc... but can't find any specifics.
Anyone here has experience working with magazines among the lines of GQ, Elle, Vogue?

They have teams of marketing people and ad sellers who cold call, use PR hook-ups, profiling etc.

I understan the marketing/sales part, but if somebody is working n launching one, how can a new kid on the block even approach such clients for advertisement?
- its going to take a few printed numbers before that happens, They all want to see who else is advertising thereMeeklo
- makes sense
OSFA - now i got it - you launch a mag!invisiblechamber
- hahaha, I don't think I have the capital to launch something lthat big...OSFA

It' s really hard. I launched a small niche magazine and I handled the editorial & design aspect. I tried the ad side but it just wasn't my forte and failed miserably. Outsource it to a professional on a percentage basis.

thanks! are there specialty sales people for such things? any idea where can I look?

Look for "media buying" or "media services". Buyers work for the companies that want to advertise, but if they have a client that matches your area/demo they'll book space with you on their behalf.
- thanks dude, u won't happen to know where would it be a good starting point or based on experience where should I look for these buyers?OSFA

Wow, I've been helping my friend doing a lot of research on this subject and it is a pretty complicated process. What I don't understand is, how do celebrities interviews features or covers work when? Do they charge per interview????
- OSFA0
well yes, it is more of an entertainment/fashion/music/trav... 'upscale' type magazine he's planning to develop and launch. Hmmm interesting, so celebrities DO charge huh? I guess his company would have to contact their agents or publicists...

The best way would be to contact the brands you want ads from and find out who does their media buying. It may be in-house, it may be outsourced to a buyer, it may be done by their marketing agency. Same is true if you want the global names or the regional/local, you need to go directly to the source.

sounds like a job for Ari Gold....

Looked into doing my own a few years back. It ain't easy but props if he gets it going. A lot of people I talked to pretty much said to give away ads to companies for the first issue or two just to get them in. If your mag takes off you can charge for it. You won't make money off of it for the first few issues, but you can then go around to other companies telling them who you got and why they should advertise too.
- makes sense. Yeah, lots of money and time needed for a project like this.. Great to find out how it all works tho..OSFA

Thanks to everyone that helped with valuable info, but I still have a few questions. Besides advertisers and capital, what are the mandatory legal requirements? Patents? Well, there are the obvious releases, copyright grants, etc, but what else should he consider before moving forward?
Attorneys want to charge him before disclosing any info that he needs or might need....
