cutting HTML for email blasts

Does someone have a nice lil checklist for doing such a thing?
Are there best practices as far as formatting your html?... css... images etc.
Is there (dare I say it?) a set of 'standards' for creating html emails?
I say 'standards' knowing that there are a number of 3rd party companies out there that do nothing but email campaigns etc - just curious if there is an 'expected' way to go about setting up these hellish, obtrusive inbox-cramming pieces of spam... thanks!

Anyone know of a good HTML / web forum that could answer these Q's?

keep your css inline, use tables, no bg images. that's it off the top of my head... read this for more:

use inline css, stick to css1 as close as you can...
dont use css2 or divs
use tables... hoo ray
you want to avoid positioning. (css2)
put a link at the top to link to a xhtml version that uses good css and clean standard compliant code

I use Fireworks , and I just roll with the exported html , I send out blasts to about 2000+ , never had a problem , also I sign up for a few news letters and I always check out there way of doing it. As fas as standards, I do not think there are any for emails
