This is a tough one. close close friend of mine needs a logo and or wordmark, and I'm doing it for him for an exchange of custom frames built for my upcoming art show, kitchen reno's and free hosting FOREVER!
Thing is, the wordmark is for an identity that he uses for all of his businesses basically. Carpentry, Network solutions and development.. I know, it's not a great idea, and he should infact split them up, but it works well for him because when he builds homes, he also sets up networks, multimedia centres, and develops web based interfaces for clients to control their multimedia from their ipod touch or whatever.
Anyhoo.. This seems like too much to tackle, and I will have to approach this project so broadly, that it's hard to start.. Any suggestions?

Oh yes, and the name is Orchestra.
- seems to be appropriate, there's a lot of shit going on in an orchestrabulletfactory

man could that be more disparate!?! good for him though to be able to do all those...

It's pretty crazy that he does all that. Indeed, and he plays in 2 bands, one of which is playing SXSW this year. The man is fuckin' busy.

I'm thinking of approaching it with a nice thin sans-serif, something in the way of Hermes Light, and an abstract approach to a shape to support the customized type..

GIMME THAT FUCCKIN FONT! Oh, wait. Not appropriate yet.

to illustrate carpentry and network solutions together is like trying to illustrate a lesbian on a wheelchair... hmmmmm. good luck.

I've seen that before, its called "man for rent"

I know. That's why simple and abstract I would imagine would be the only way to go - no direct imagery.. ?

atwo sided b card would be appropriate.

yes brains, that's what i would say also. i think your main problem is not the LOOK of the logo but the CONTENT. you're already stating how you want it to look but the problem is that this guy does everything so you need something that can serve as a over-arching 'brand' and logo that can work or hold everything under it. something abstract would definitely be easier and you could then develop or work that tagline into it.

yeah menos, I agree. I mean, think of fucking wal-mart or something all encompassing, those guys could carry or do anything at this point, I think developing it as a brand, not as a specified service is probably the only way this is going to happen.

sounds like it, alhough it is not absolute, of course! have you talked about this with your 'client'? see what he wants or expects this to convey etc etc...

one of the local handymans in our community also lists "male stripper" on his business card, i kid you not.

He's left it up to me completely and he's fine with that.

I'd write 'orchestra enterprises' in MS office, font size 14 (any font), make 'orchestra' bold, take screenshot and start over on monday.
