Hi guys, need to get something off to print but have not done this before so was hoping some one could confirm this was OK or not.
Basically Im going to use a standard 4 colour job with extra spot red. Thing is I have used my spot red in a gradient with a standard cmyk darker red. Will this pose any problems for the printer?
-Thanks.

yes.

Are you printing fine type in the red elsewhere? Or is there a large solid area? I guess I'm wondering what creates the need for the red spot color? Reds aren't difficult to reproduce using CMYK.

I would really not in five billion years attempt to make that work by consulting with anyone about it over the internet. What you're proposing is largely pointless, extremely complex in many ways and ... well... I just...
No.

I wanted to achieve a bright red but sounds like CMYK is perfectly able so Il change my artwork.
But with regard to the gradient, won't the PDFX1a separate that spot as a separate plate anyways?

If you're using a spot color, then you need to make sure you're printing 5-color, not 4. That being said, even printing 5-colors, I don't think the gradient would work using the spot color. Use the CMYK equivalent of the PMS color in the gradient. Like Josev said, unless you've got a large solid area, fine print in the spot color or something along those lines, I'm not sure why you need a spot color.
- too late w/ my reply. you decided to change the artwork. good idea IMOsintaxera
