If you're using a spot color, then you need to make sure you're printing 5-color, not 4. That being said, even printing 5-colors, I don't think the gradient would work using the spot color. Use the CMYK equivalent of the PMS color in the gradient. Like Josev said, unless you've got a large solid area, fine print in the spot color or something along those lines, I'm not sure why you need a spot color.
