was one year into degree in computer science, when careers counsellor asked if I'd ever heard of Industrial Design (a whole field I didn't know existed, I knew about fine arts and engineering but never realised there was this bit in between them both) .. visited a design school, signed up for ID course that week. best enlightenment ever.

my mother and stepfather were graphic designers. my high school arts/graphics teachers told me i should go to design school... being an unruly teenager i shunned the idea of following in my parents footsteps and pushed aside what my teachers were telling me. A few years later, with no real future plan in site i put the bong down and thought "what can i do for a living?" and the obvious answer pushed it's way through my thick skull. That was 12 years ago.

I did art in Highschool. Concentrated on Painting, Drawing, and Photography. When we were looking at colleges, most of my friends were looking at Art HighSchools. I didn't think I'd ever be super famous, so I was worried aobut making money. A friend of mine had a brother who went to Carnegie Mellon and told me of this thing called "Design". I thought...."sure".
Design seemed to be a great marrige for me of my love of art, detail, and mathematics and computer science. I wasn't top at either of them, but add them together and I've done really well in design and believe I can be top at that (Interaction design specifically)
I remember a college teacher telling our class they should think about what they want to be if design didn't work out. I thought "Design is my plan if being a rock star or professional wrestler doesn't work out.... if I suck at design I'm fucked"
...so far things seemed to have worked out.

i'm not a great designer, better at retouching and hand drawing but liked : comic books, rave flyers, robotech, & other creative magazines all thru H.S.
i started studying drafting thru H.S. and 1st year in college. A friend , taking GD classes, told me GD gives you more creative freedom....got a AAS, continuing ed classes and lil freelance ...so on, and so on...

I used to always want to be an Architect, growing up, but figured they didn't get paid well. Then I ran across an issue of ID Magazine in Borders back in 1990 that got me hooked on Industrial Design. I knew at that point I'd be a Designer for the rest of my life.

I was 14 years old, and I made a website on geocities. Obsession with aesthetic (and the improvement of) ensued.

I was signed up for the fine art department, but when I went into the room for orientation I realized how limited my future might be. So, I mozey'd on into the graphic design room & never looked back.

LiV you and I sound a lot alike in terms of how and when we started. Drawing, painting, illustration (2D) were all my bread and butter growing up and into college. I went to the wrong orientation and this visionary instructor was talking about the web and all it could be. that's when i realized i didn't want to be a starving artist.
