Not to be too philosophical, but you could always just spend more money, and get exactly what you want.

Just think of two colour printing more like... "two inks" printing...

yea i think what overprint is is same as transparency in illustrator? I assume that. Thanks for help.

You wont get file with transparency features through a printer's door. Also, to the suggestion that you use brwon and gold and get a thrid colour via overprint... metallics have a resist and the brown wont sit evenly, if at all, on top. It would look like a dawgs dinner.

if you want to do this in illustrator, get your black object on top of the gold object. Select the object or objects that you want to overprint (black object).
In the Attributes palette, select Overprint Fill. then you will need to find a tint of the black which will create the best brown. you may need to do litho proofing for this.

I have a feeling the person who posted the original question moved away, got married, settled down, took a part time job at the post office, retired with a little pension and now raises Angora rabbits in her back yard.

haha I'm cracking up spooky. You read me like a book, but I am still here. Your little plan seems about right though haha. Well the settling down raising rabbits part.
I may be sticking with two colors w/o overprinting but then again I may try agent's suggestion too.
Gracias all.
