Anthony Turner, a test question for you. On which traditional British occasion dating back to the time of the Redruthian Wayward Pelts, is the Queen required to wear her union Jack underpants?

go to after effects... first use a black and white ramp... a little bevel and then use a colorama... gold... it works wonders

Forget about the gold gradient, it's pure grated cheese my friend.

The client wants it -
The client is always right-
You should learn this
- detritus0
No, no, no - if you do your job properly you should guide your client towards the best and most appropriate choice.
Clients, generally, don't have a clue - which is why they PAY YOU.
- this is truth.gramme
- Its very easy to get steadily beaten off the track though. I spent all of last year giving people what they asked for.********
- Oh, for sure it is - but you get paid to make the effort to try and convince them otherwise.
This isn't shop retail.detritus - Nor is it Sparta.detritus
- Not is it the local Spa supermarket. Anyway, point taken, but I got slowly beat to the ground in 2007 .********

Quite an idealistic opinion, I wish I had youth on my side again.
Please could everyone stop posting on this subject - I truly wish I never came across this .....,Boys Club' website.
- detritus0
It's not idealistic at all! A designer is paid to make decisions - if all you do is shift pixels around, then you're merely an artworker, and if you don't know how to pull off a gradient in Photobooth, you're not a very good one.
Your job - your raison d'etre* is to act as a professional guide - if the client refuses to agree with you, then fair enough - do the shoddy work, pay your bills - but before that, you've got an obligation to your client's dollar and you own morality to question where necessary and guide the design process appropriately.
I can see why you've been riled by some of the earlier responses, but if you've really been in the biz for 30 years, your knowledge should be deeper, and your skin thicker. As it stands, I am liable to not believe a word you say.
* did you like that? i did... i'ma gonna do it one more time too - "raison d'etre" UNGH!

ignoring the above - for everyone filtering gold gradient in the future here is the ps-alchemist way to do it. forget the gradient tool. gold itself does look like nothing. it's all about reflections, so focus on them. take a random, or in case of larger area a theme-related photography and paste it in. don't gaussian blur it! if need be - use an already blurry photography. for total control over the appearance and if budget allows compose a appropriate environment photgraphically. then colourize it using selective correction from dark brown, maybe even black shadows over yellow - carefull with orange - up to white. keep the highlights white. this is perfect and i give it away for free. for a better tomorrow.
