I think Jobs is just bitter that he doesn't have time to read any more. He's too busy working on the next mbp.

I just read an or rather watched a news cast the other day about the latest Halo book. The reporter claimed that "Gamers don't read."
Think it's just weird hearing people claim no one is reading anymore. They might not be reading books but I wonder what percentage of people are active members in forums or community sites?
I personally go through phases of reading. Sometimes I'll just devour any book I can get my hands on for months on end, and then I'll stop and not read for a few months to a year, and then go on another tear.

Re: Steve Jobs -- What a ridiculously ignorant thing to say.
Re: Khurram -- 4/5s of all books go unfinished AND 1/5 of the public buy 4/5s of the books? Coincidences in numbers like this make me wary.
Regarding unfinished books, I have two classifications: Ongoing reads and shitty books.
Ongoing reads are non-fiction or collections that I read for a day or two and go back to at a later time. They will eventually be 'read'.
Shitty books are just that. There's no reason to continue reading a book that sucks when there are more great books available then I'll ever have the opportunity to complete in my lifetime.

Sorry, didn't read your thread. But I'd just like to tell everyone that I'll be spending my weekend knocking out tile and painting my kitchen cabinets.

I think the sadder indictment is the statistic that 80% of books that are bought are never read/finished. 80% of books out there have never been fully read!
The industry calls it the 80/20 rule. 80 percent of product produced for 20 percent of consumer.
I could write a book, and just have the first two chapters done, and leave the rest empty. 80% of people will not complain. Imagine that... Either i been reading too much Ayn Rand, or mediocrity truly is prolific.
I for one am THANKFUL for the 80% of chodes in the world today. The 80% that allows products to be economically viable enough to be produced for the 20% who give a shit. The 80% that allows the product to be cheap enough so that the 20% can utilise it.

I believe in Randd, (only if he is the old Rand though) if it's an imposter I'll punch him or her in the tummy (really hard as well >:( )

This reminds me of that Time Magazine article about J.K. Rowling. She deserved to be mentioned because she re-charged the book industry for young people in an enormous way. Including for myself. Still, I wonder what will happen once I graduate. Right now I mainly read books for school. I'm not sure I would read that much for fun. Maybe once in a while, but definitely not that much anymore. For some reason it doesn't excite me the way it used to.

^ he didn't realise he was talking about motherfuckin printed materials

if forthy percent of americans only read one book last year then yes america people pretty much don't read, however did it say how many books the other 60 percent read ?.....

Apparently no one wears blue jeans with black jumpers tucked in anymore either.

I read, and I see lots and lots of people reading on the tube every day.
Also, last time I checked book stores seemed to be doing just fine, maybe he should have thought about that before making such a sweeping statement.

statisitcs are fun... it doesn't say his source, or what the study (if there was one) was intending to research. maybe it was just books... people read websites and magazines and newspapers all day long. some people have books on tape. some people read a few pages every night before bed. its possible to stretch out a book for several months doing this.
90% of all statistics are made up or distorted

One of my favorite things about books it that it dosen't matter how old they are they are still useable. I have books over 100 years old and I can still read them.
My flash portfolio I did in 2000? Can't open it anymore. I see the same happening with digital book files.
And yeah, I spend enough time looking at a screen already

i honestly have not read a book in at least 10 years. totally honest. not 'agreeing' w/ Jobs by a long-shot, but i honestly do not 'read' in terms of books/journals.
now, i do 'read' TONS of online sources/articles/essays/blogs/me... but books + me = foreign.
- fair enough but you are totally missing out imo. I consider that to be a shame, completely nonjudgmentallykelpie
- sure, understand. before this however, i read books like that singer chain smokes. just grew out of it, personally.madirish
- not sure I would classify that as "growth"Randd
