If you're into some easy-to-digest suspense, I've been enjoying Dean Koontz's "The Husband" the last couple of days.
"We have your wife. You can get her back for 2 million--cash. You've got until midnight Wednesday."
"This is nuts. Where would I get two million bucks?"
"You'll find a way."
"It isn't possible. I'm a gardener. I've got maybe eleven thousand in the bank."
"Just so you'll know we're serious... See that guy across the street?"
Still holding the phone to his ear, Mitch turned, saw a man walking a dog. ... Rifle fire shattered the stillness, and the dogwalker went down, shot in the head.
"Midnight Wednesday, Mitch. We're damn serious."

By way of an EOY list in Newsweek I have discovered a really great Japanese author named Haruki Murakami. The book I picked up is called "Norwegian Wood," and he has several books that look really interesting, including some short story books.
I have also been reading short story books by http://www.mcsweeneys.com for a while. My girlfriend got me their Comic Book issue for Christmas and I totally love it. The art styles have about as much variety as you can get and the comics are pretty smart.

Murakami has great book covers. I've tried to read some of his stories, but they were boring. Great covers though.

"The Third Policeman" by Flann O'Brien (one of, if my my all time, favourite book)
"Being There" by Jerzy Kosinski is always a quick and fun read.

I just finished "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett. Good stuff. I liked Neil's work w/ the Sandman comics, so I figured I'd try a book. I'm reading "American Gods" by him now....pretty good so far.

Have you already read "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand? Should keep you busy for a bit...

Also, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" BY Dave Eggers lives up to it's title.

If you want a long, great read, pick up The Descent by Jeff Long.
http://www.amazon.com/Descent-Je…The movie was loosely based on it, so don't judge it by the movie. If they'd made a movie of the actual book, holy hell (literally... read they book, you'll get it) it would be something. It would need to be at least a 2 part movie. Epic stuff. Just finished it last night.
