Legality of Altering Fonts?

Can anyone shed some light on the legality of using altered fonts for paying client work?
For example, say I took a font like Avenir which I legally purchased and own. I then proceeded to make minor tweaks to it for a specific client job I worked on. Is there anything illegal about this? What if I then proceeded to take the altered font and set it all over again in Fontographer for use only on the project, with obviously no intent to resell it.

isn't that what people do everyday? you own it and you're not selling it... i'd say thats perfectly fine

Read the license. In majority of fonts any tampering with is illegal.

If you own the source font and it is your wish to use an amended/adjusted/adapted version of it for a client's job I don't that is a probalo. If you tried to sell it as a font in its own right, toothless, crazy hundred year old men would wait until you were sleeping and then suck your eyes right out of your head with wet quivering lips, and you would have to lie there screaming, rendered helpless by the guilt of what you had done.

Isn't it only illegal if you edit the actual font file? I think you're okay if you're only editing it in Illustrator to create custom line art... you're not changing the font itself.
- Well, technically I would think I am.czawada
- The appearance yeah, but not the OTF or PFM file.turnerworks

oh for fucks sake. edit the font and get on with it you big jessie, the FBI has not put a tracker in it, you're not reselling it with a different name. This would be one of those situations I think any truly real human being would be able to go their own way on.
