Brand Gap is basic and good. The Brand Dictionary from AIGA is fun. For serious stuff, look for things by Aacker, Brand Portfolio Strategy or something similar.

got Michael Evamy's "Logo" book over the holidays ... great reference for logos of all shapes and sizes

logos are an aspect of a brand but they aren't branding. It's like saying all that you are can be represented in a single photograph. Ya git meh, blud?
