I just installed leopard to my MBP.
I have an external 500GB HDD, and i would like to backup using timemachine.
In case my MBP crashes, ca i take the external drive and boot from another mac?if not i would like to make an additional 120 gb partition on my external HDD with a bootable 1 to 1 copy of my Hard Disk > what software can you recommend to do this?
thank you

os x has a built-in command line tool called asr that does exactly this:
sudo asr -source / -target /Volumes/YourBackupDrive -erase -noprompt
many of the little helpful apps for os x are just gui wrappers for command line stuff that already exists on your machine. the cammand line is your friend, embrace it.

that command looks kind of scary!

I can't think of a good use I could put time machine to. I don't need all erased versions of each file, I just need copy of all current files.

the -erase flag is optional, it erases the target volume which is recommended. otherwise. it will merge your backup with whatever is already on there.

i found this while figuring out the options of the asr command.
http://developer.apple.com/docum…i'll give it a try,

I use Carbon Copy Cloner, it duplicates your drive, with scheduling options which I don't use as I rarely plug the backup drive in.
It's not the best solution. Something that only adds incremental changes would've probably been quicker.

I use SuperDuper for making backups. Similar to Carbon Copy Cloner I think though. Doesn't keep versions like Time Machine, but is bootable.

carbon copy cloner is a gui for asr

this should do the trick
sudo rm -r /*

so how does this thing work? how is this different to having a hard drive full of files?

Time machine is 'bootable' (sorta), if your drive crashes insert Leopard DVD and select restore from time machine. End.
