San Jose isnt a very nice place.. I mean, you should be carefull with your things.. money, camera, but not dangerous as many other places, just try to know where to go and ask before, outside the "valle central" there are to many places to go, Guanacaste for beach, Volcan Arenal, Manuel Antonio Beach, Manzanillo, maybe its a good place.. almost any national park, there is to many things to see around here..
