this is bugging the living fuck out of me, I was sure that it was possible to control the character width of fonts using css - in essence to emulate condensed / expanded fonts....
To my utter dismay I can't figure out how to do it.
Anyone?

letter-spacing: 1px;
or do you mean actually control the letter width itself?

to control the letter width itself... like in order to fake a condensed version of a font...

not possible as far as I know. just letter-spacing and line-height...

You need multiple master fonts to do this don't you? Oh how I miss multiple master fonts.

You can try sIFR or some custom made Flash solution if it's for small chunks of text (ie. headings)

Wow, fantastic. Cheers emecks, I hope they continue building the library of available fonts. I had a bazillion Multiple Master fonts purloined from one of my previous employers but they don't work on these new fangled machines no more. That's quite a small list of opentype alternatives but hopefully it'll build over time!

you don't want to stretch a typeface that wasn't meant to be stretched.
