yeah, those anti smoking laws don't make sense, if the gov doesn't want people smoking why not just outlaw cigarretes?

Personally, I like how it has been banned from most places in my university. Even bus shelters are smoke-free places now, which is good because I won't smell anymore. Plus, my asthma won't act up. The I-will-smell-bad reason is not that important since smoking in Ottawa isn't prevalent to begin with, but the asthma reason is good enough. I realize you can say this about other things though...
- stand on an overpass in a major city and your asthma will prob come up too.mrdobolina

^^so now that you don't have cigarette smoke out there... why do you still smell funny?

Mom and Pop bars close down because of a smoking ban? When Boston instituted a ban everyone wailed and cried that all the bars would go out of business. If you were ever at to the Lizard Lounge back in the day you probably have black lung already...the place still packs people in and I actually enjoy being able to go without smoke oozing from my pores the next day...eeewww.
- monkey, I love ya but ya aint hitting foundry bars...mrdobolina

I've heard it go either way, monkeyshine...
... just search some news stories on Google and you'll see both sides - Some businesses that were 'known' for their smoky atmosphere haven't gone out of biz... they've just got new clientèle... and some have gone completely out of business... like dobs mentioned earlier - 'Mom & Pop' in the sense of blue collar clientèle.- ok...well, I guess I'm not able to be that sympathetic. I am curious to see in the next 10ish years if/how these bans have affected public health stats.monkeyshine

who wins? people that do not want their clothes to smell and go out twice a month or people who go to bars after work everyday?
please fight for the common man.

They passed a ban here in Seattle and everyone bitched like it was the end of the world, but guess what, one year later and everything is pretty much the same. True, they are private establishments but if I want to go out and see a show, what choice do I have? It was pretty hard to find a club or bar that didn't allow smoking before the ban, now there is a ban and the whole experience is a lot nicer.

believe me I see both sides... but the bars that close are the ones just surviving. If the factory scaled down, they would close because of that. Sucks, but, from what I've seen, the bars that make it always find a way to keep the smokers happy. And who knows, maybe a few people will live longer or have a better reason to quit. Every smoker I know wants to quit... but doesn't.
Odd Question: When a smoker makes out with another smoker, do they think that smell/taste is good?

it really is a shame that a dope blues club on the southside is going to have to follow the same smoke rules as some weak north side lincoln park bar.
homogenization is weak.

if they allow exemptions this would happen (currently happening here in l'ville): A group of bar owners would fight the ban saying it's unconstitutional, and the ban will be ruled unconstitutional, the bars will be able to allow smoking for a few weeks while another ban is rushed through the gov. that covers every bar in the city/state. So for those few weeks of smoking pleasure, they ruined it for a few establishments that got an exemption. So who was looking out for the smokers then?

Im just sayin, blanket rules are weak.

They should make all establishment either decide to be smoking or not. That way the crybabies don't have to go. It's an business decision not a "government desicion". BTW i'm glad my employees can't smoke in my facility anymore. State law son!
