Looking at a 42" for my living room. Any recommendations on brand or Plasma vs. LCD?

i just got a 40" LCD Samsung. the 42" looked like it was too big for my apt. it does its business, i use it strictly for gaming, as do not watch any tv or movies.

i have a panasonic 42" plasma. the color quality is amazing, more natural. you have to be careful with burn in but i haven't had any problem with it. it's probably around $950-1000 these days.

Lots and lots of info... do a search for the model you like and see what people are saying, and most importantly, how much they are paying.

thanks guys, yeah gaming, movies & the occasional game in HD is what im after. I have heard alot of the pixel burn with plasma & bad for glare too, I have huge windows on the wall right next to where I want to mount the TV from is a LCD less glare from light?
- LCD is made for gaming
PLASMA is made for HD movies and the like.e-pill

i bought the 55" samsung 1080p dlp and i love it. if you're not going to hang the tv on the wall dlp might be an option to look into, although i hear sony is discontinuing their line of dlp tvs. a friend of mine has the 42" aquios plasma and it's really amazing. i would love to put one of those in our bedroom for late night porno.... er.... leno.... LENO watching.

i have a 42" plasma next to a window facing at just a slight angle and it doesn't bother me too much. Just close the shutters if it's too bad. Sometimes the table lamp on the other side of the room does, though...

i suggest you go to a tv store and see the differences between the sets, i have noticed that a plasma will show sports and movies a hella lot crisper but in terms of pop colours and games it doesnt compare to a LCD, and a LCD is good for movies just as well. to me they are all the same, its a major step up from a picture tube but in the end its just a tv.

I also like the ones with the ambient glow behind them, is that available on both?
- i never really understood the point of that. i find it ridiculous but u haven't seen one in front of me...menos
- philips ambilight and i think it's available for lcd or plasma. also you can buy a kit and DIY.tkmeister
- but what for??! what's the point?!menos
- it's a nice touch when watching a movie in a dark room.radar

my 42" plasma has anti glare coating. but if you are planning to play game a lot, then LCD might be better. i am more of a HD movie watcher than a gamer. I have to say, watching Discovery HD Theatre is pretty amazing on 42" plasma. the color is just sooo stunning.

Also, get Digital Video Essentials or AVIA II to tune your tv, it makes a big difference.

i got a 42" full hd 1080 lcd sceptre for $800. it's sony's name to shoot for the lower end lcd buyers. has all high end sony parts and a toshiba screen. it id fucking fantastic, especially for the price. it looks at least as good as any 'high-end' lcd i've seen.

Pioneer Elite Plasmas will have the best color/quality, but cost a small fortune.
I've got a Sony LCD, but its a year old. Happy with it overall, but you can certainly notice the issues LCDs have with black areas (the ghosted look when things move).
For movies, I'd go for the Pioneer, NECs have superb image quality too.
- i'd love to get a Pioneer Elite series. they are just amazing.tkmeister

I have a Panasonic 50" plasma 1080P, love it. I game alot and have no problems. The colors pop and the blacks are rich.
