From their press release yesterday:
"For far too long our people have suffered at the hands of the colonial apartheid system imposed on the Lakota Sioux. Our treaties with the United States government are nothing more than worthless words on worthless paper – repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life.
The devastation this has wrought is clear: + Lakota men have a life expectancy of less than 44 years, lowest of any country in the World (excluding AIDS) including Haiti. + The Lakota infant mortality rate is 5x the U.S. Average.+ The Tuberculosis rate on Lakota reservations is approx 800% higher than the U.S national average. + 97% of our Lakota people live below the poverty line.+ Unemployment rates on our reservations are approximately 85%. + Teenage suicide rate is 150% higher than the U.S national average for this group.+ Our Lakota language is an Endangered Language, on the verge of extinction.
We have no choice but to take this historic action to protect our people and our way of life, and reclaim our freedom from the colonial systems of the United States Government. So we travel to Washington D.C. to withdraw from our treaties with the United States and announce full return of our sovereign status under Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution, International and Natural Law."

Wow, good for them. The only concern is, if 97% of them are living below the poverty line now, what will a fledgling government do to cure that? I am not really familiar with the economy in that area, but, it doesnt seem as though it would exactly thrive. I wonder what their plan is to remedy the problems they site in their press release. Good luck to them, it is a bold move. I hope it works out.

Hey if that means the government stops handing them money because they lost a war and refuse to modernize (sorry live life like the white man) more power to them. I just hope that they have the resources to fund their little country. I hope the French don't get any ideas from this....

lol interesting what freedon means to those in the land of the free...I for one would rather be poor a free. Its kinda sad in a way...that I have prolly seen a native american once...in all the years I have spent travelling to the US.
Oh well, politics is a bitch and might is right...the indigenous people of the world seems to have been fucked by the guys with the bigger guns...oh well maybe they can have back a little of their own in this era of the "pen".

jkilla, there is a fuck ton more to it. every time someone generalizes a whole group of people as "lazy" or in this case "refusing to modernize," you know that the whole picture is not being looked at. my gf is an anthropology major and knows more about it, but basically, the way the reservation system is run, coupled with historical economic pressures on the reservation system, led to the state of affairs today. it's an enormously complex issue, and one that can't be written off in one sentence such as "they refuse to modernize and mooch off of government checks."
in summary - stereotypes are a bitch.
