Anyone here from South LA? I am on vacation until next year here, but have been having trouble finding good places to party; ie. good music, drinks and a nice vibe.

Any suggestions? Went to Barney's Beanery last night...it was ok, but would prefer somewhere that has a good DJ instead of karaoke.

    TY

Barney's Beanery is in West Hollywood, isn't it? How's South Central? If I find myself south of Olympic I start to get scared.

LOL man I am from kingston, JA I don't get scared easily, the town I am in, is lawndale about 8mins from LAX. That all said, I was told to avoid south central LA, Watts, compton etc.

The Dresden Rooms. Its in Los Feliz but its pretty sweet. It was featured in the film swingers and they have great jazz music..looks like to stepped right into another era. Speaking of swingers there is also the bar The Derby.

If you dont mind a gay bar, The Abbey is a great place. In Silver lake there are some great bars. The Little joy ( a hole in the wall place but rad) and The Shortstop which is right down the street from little joy. It has a dance floor, great music, a black and white photobooth, pac man table game, and a pool table. Plus after, you can stumble to the corner and meet this lady who cooks these amazingly yummy hotdogs for your late night munchies after downing a few.

(sorry this is so long) ALSO..if you love scotch, there is a great scotch bar downtown called 7 Grand . (They serve other drinks though, including an amazing mint julip served in an icy chilled silver mug). The decor is awsome, plaid carpet, hunting memorabilia.

There is also this great jazz bar in santa monica. Ontop of jazz music there is also live burlesque shows throughout the night..if you sit at the bar they dance right over you. hold on to your drinks. I forget the name of the place but if you are interested ill look it up.

so there you go. if you need more suggestions let me know! ( im not an alcoholic i swear)

in Los Feliz/Attwater Village area, there's The Griffin, which is a kinda dungeon'esque atmosphere. Pretty low key, bartenders are cool... just an overall good bar.

I know some areas south of LA. I don't go clubbing over there but there's some really dope food on crenshaw if you want some good soul food, african food or fish. You can stop just about anywhere there if you drive a little north of where you are into the baldwin hills area. People call it the black beverly hills because some parts are extremely nice. If you want to catch a movie I suggest seeing "This Christmas" at the magic johnson theatre or the bridge -- two theatres close to the area. If you haven't heard anything about that movie and you are black and dont mind getting a lil cheesey seeing it at a black theatre is pretty fucking fun.

Otherwise i bet something a little bit more your speed if going south on the 405 to long beach and check out some of the bars over in that area near the college and around there. Long beach tends to have a little more color and is a good mix of college scenester and locals.

If you have a car, check out Venice beach. There are some small bars on the boardwalk and main street where you can sit and watch the crazies go by. It's a great place to get "day drunk" on vacation.

I'm not the only jamican on the board now? rad.

LOL naw shellie...your not, I have been a newstoday member about 4yrs now I think...shit time is so unstructured in my head...well put it this way, I cant remember not having newstoday as my homepage on the 6 web browsers I run regularly.

Thanks for the heads up though...I have a car (ahem minivan) so I am mobile, so I will be out and about.

Where in JA are you from by the way?

  • shellie0

My brothers and sisters and I were all born here. My mom is from JA somewhere and left when she was fairly young and moved to new york. It's sort of a long story but my mom and my grandma left there sort of in a hurry and never talk about it. Apparently her dad went back a year or two after they came to the states and we've never found him. It's likely he'd be dead by now anyway.

Same story for the most part but my dad was born in Trinidad along with 1 of his sisters before they moved somewhere in the south and then to Cleveland, Ohio where my half brother was born.

My guess is on both sides they moved because they had to and they've been oddly secretive about why they left and where they came from. My mom sounds like she's lived in southern California all her life. It's really weird. My parents are also very very old so I can imagine some shit was going down then.

My family -- we're just some lost island kids.

    ANNNNYWAY.... Welcome to LA.

The last time my mom went to Jamaica right before I was born some lady asked my mom to hold her baby for a second... well -- not really asked but more pushed the baby onto her and then split. It really messed her up.

  • xhanubis0

Holy shit! And I thought I had stories to tell. No, my experience has been alot more tranquil. No midnight escapes or donated babies. So have you guys tried looking for your dad...?

you should try sunday contact...a radio program that people call to try find lost relatives...I could try and get the number for you if you like.

its my moms dad. hes probably dead now. if hes still alive there hes like 98 or something. the last person who knew anything was my great uncle who also came from Jamaica but he couldn't remember a thing and took the family secrets to the grave. We dont know his real name because my grandma used a fake name on the birth certificates because she was having a child out of wedlock and that's what they did back in the day. I think he went back to Jamaica and started a new family.

It all makes me think they fled because they were in trouble or avoiding some trouble -- but in the process they severed any ties with the family we had over there. Crazy huh?

So my family here is very small. They either got here -- or they didn't.
